New DVD Releases For February 20th, 2007

February 20th, 2007

FLUSHED AWAY

The first computer animated film from Britain’s Aardman Animation (of Wallace and Gromit fame) is a spirited adventure about a pampered pet mouse (voiced by Hugh Jackman) with a james Bond fantasy life who gets flushed into a miniature subterranean London in the sewers. Kate Winslet voices the spunky sewer rat and Ian McKellen spoofs his villain roles as a toad crimelord plotting the end of rat civilization. The film is quick witted and colorful, stuffed with sight gags and clever comments and lots of action. The voice cast also features Jean Reno, Bill Nighy, Andy Serkis, and Shane Richie.

THE PRESTIGE

Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale are journeyman magic assistants in Victorian era London who become rivals as they rise to fame as magicians in their own right, Jackman as the fame-hungry showman and Bale as the consummate professional and purist out to create the perfect trick. Christopher Nolan directs with his trademark narrative shuffling, moving back and forth through their lives to find the roots of the obsessive competition turned fatal rivalry. Michael Caine is the engineer who helps concoct the devices, Scarlett Johansson a sexy assistant turned spy, and David Bowie plays real-life inventor and visionary Nikola Tesla. Piper Perabo, Andy Serkis, and Ricky Jay co-star.

BABEL

Three stories across four countries and three continents are woven together in the third film in the loose trilogy from director Alejandro González Iñárritu and writer Guillermo Arriaga. Nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay, it stars Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett as an American couple in Morocco, Adriana Barraza as their Mexican nanny back home in California, Gael García Bernal as her nephew, and Rinko Kikuchi as a deaf-mute Japanese teenage daughter of Kôji Yakusho. Their stories are intertwined by misunderstandings and miscommunications.

MARIE ANTOINETTE

Sofia Coppola casts Kirsten Dunst, the star of her debut film The Virgin Suicides, as Marie Antoinette, the teenage Austrian princess married off to France’s young and indifferent King Louis XVI (Jason Schwartzman) and sent to an alien world where politics has become social spectacle: the French court. It’s a rock and roll version of history, where royal life is a bubble of privilege and culture is reflected through Coppola’s modern sensibilities. Judy Davis, Rip Torn, Rose Byrne, Asia Argento, Molly Shannon, Shirley Henderson, Danny Huston, and Steve Coogan co-star.

MAN OF THE YEAR

Robin Williams plays a popular talk show host famous for speaking his mind about politicians and their cronies who is swept into running for president by a grassroots movement. The more he skewers his opponents, the higher his poll numbers go. Barry Levinson directs the political comedy and Christopher Walken, Laura Linney, Jeff Goldblum, and Lewis Black co-star.

THE HILLS HAVE EYES 2 Official Trailer Online

Hey everyone, Ryan here. Well, it looks as though Fox Atomic has just released the official trailer for THE HILLS HAVE EYES 2 over at Yahoo!

For the most part, I hate sequels to horror movies. The last good sequel to a horror movie I saw was SAW III, and even that sequel hardly did any justice to the first. People are suckers for seconds, no matter how good or bad the original was.

But after viewing this trailer, I must admit I am now a little pumped to see this one. Although the film gives off a “TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE” feel to it, the setting makes the movie have its own feel. I would say EYES 2 will be a cross between THE DESCENT and MASSACRE, all topped off with Wes Craven’s terror.

Don’t take it from me, check out the trailer yourself!

Possible Spoilers: Plot Details On SAW IV

Hey everyone, Ryan here with some more information from Andrew regarding Fanshen Cox’s possible role in SAW IV. Here is what Andrew had to say:

Ryan, I had my meeting with Fanshen Cox today, and she had so much to tell me about her character in the film. Fanshen plays Detective Rae Solomon, a determined part of the team on the hot trail of John Kramer. Fanshen tells me that Solomon is going through a divorce, and that her husband has been cheating on her for the past year with another man’s wife/mother of two (Tara Reid possibly?) Solomon and her team discover many of “Jigsaw” crime scenes, including the bathroom and the house.Fanshen says that she fell in love with the script when she got to the part about when she and Hoffman stumble upon the bathroom. Fanshen also says that she would be willing to act in Saw V if the script called for it. As for now, she says Saw IV does not make it clear as to whether Solomon survives the entire affair, even though she makes it clear that her character does not endure any physical pain throughout the entire film. Fanshen also talked about the “Jeff” character. She says the audience will relate with him more in this film. Fanshen says she most creeped out about what the little girl, Corbett, and Jeff have to endure.

Fanshen went on to reveal to me some more information about the background behind some of the new characters, and she talked a little bit about how much she enjoyed the twist at the end of the film, the most shocking for her by far she said.

More info on Saw IV as I receive… For now, check out Thomas Fenton’s new website, in which he features Saw IV fan-made posters.
