ENDER’S GAME film moving forward?

It sure seems that way after Roberto Orci tweeted earlier “Ender’s Game! Us(K/O), Oddlot, and Gavin Hood taking his amazing script to the town! Who wants some?” There had been some rumblings in September that Gavin Hood (X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE) was busy working on a script for an adaptation of the novel ENDER’S GAME by Orson Scott Card. Hood wrote a script and was working with Odd Lot Entertainment on getting production of the film underway.

It sounds like everything has fallen in place for production to finally move forward after Orci’s tweet. It seems those three guys have a script to work with that they’re proud of and want to establish some kind of deal with Odd Lot Entertainment. Nothing has been confirmed, as far as I know, so be wary with this news.

The “K” is referencing Alex Kurtzman, who has worked with Orci for some time now. The two have worked on many big-budget films like TRANSFORMERS, STAR TREK, EAGLE EYE and the most recent being COWBOYS AND ALIENS.

Here is a brief synopsis of ENDER’S GAME:

Set in Earth’s future, the novel presents an imperiled humankind who have barely survived two conflicts with the Formics (an insectoid alien race also known as the “Buggers”). In preparation for an anticipated third invasion, an international fleet maintains a school to find and train future fleet commanders. The world’s most talented children, including the novel’s protagonist, Ender Wiggin, are taken at a very young age to a training center known as the Battle School. There, teachers train them in the arts of war through increasingly difficult games including ones undertaken in zero gravity in the Battle Room where Ender’s tactical genius is revealed.

Never had the pleasure of reading this vaunted sci-fi classic, believe it or not,but I certainly hope that this movie lives up to expectations.

Read the book and was not impressed. Found it very repetitive with very little character development. Ender trains, Ender trains some more…etc. Sounds like a standard Hollywood film.

@ Shawna – Actually that’s a lot of character development in the book. The book itself is used as an “example” of what a hero’s journey is. There’s nuances that make this the perfect bait to become a movie and it’d be a blockbuster.

It’s my understanding that Orson Card only wrote Ender’s Game as the prelude to the next book he wrote, Speaker For The Dead. He wanted to show the background to that books main character.

I can’t imagine this movie script being worthwhile unless they’re willing to go with the hard “R” rating that the novel would deserve.

Spoilers (for the book): During the course of his very young life, Ender Wiggin, the protagonist, is responsible for the serious beating of one child and the death of another. Both are in self-defense, but both are fairly horrible scenes nevertheless.

Unfortunately, a scene of a six year old kicking another six year old to death, or smashing his face in with a headbutt, just isn’t going to fly on the big screen. Too much money to be made in the PG market.
