What is “Movie of the Day?” This is where we showcase one movie every day and explain why we love this movie. This is just for fun and for you to get to know If It’s Movies a little bit better.
Too often is this film compared to SAW, which should be just the opposite. The two movies are very similar in that people wake up surrounded by traps, although I believe CUBE did it much better. In CUBE, the people don’t know they’re surrounded by traps until it’s too late, at least it’s too late for a few of them. During the course of the movie, the six main characters eventually meet and start traveling through the cube together. As the story progresses, we learn more about each of the characters and learn what kind of special skill each one posses. These skills they have are their best bet to getting out of the cube alive, but only if they all work together.
We never learn why these people were chosen to be put inside of the cube, which is one of the film’s strongest asset. The cube itself also remains unknown. No one knows where it came from, who put it there or who made it. CUBE is a very engrossing movie which relies heavily on dialogue to propel the story further. But amidst all of the talking, there are parts of extreme tension when a major character decides to move into another cube. Even though the characters have figured out a way to “beat” the traps, the audience is still on edge waiting to see if the proposed solution is true.
Check out a brief synopsis of the film, which is basically a recap of what I have already written. If you’re a fan of the SAW series, I highly recommend this film to fans of horror and psychological thrillers. It’s a great watch and will have you thinking for a while.
Six different people, each from a very different walk of life, awaken to find themselves inside a giant cube with thousands of possible rooms. Each has a skill that becomes clear when they must band together to get out: a cop, a math whiz, a building designer, a doctor, an escape master, and a disabled man. Each plays a part in their thrilling quest to find answers as to why they’ve been imprisoned.
There are two sequels but I can’t say if they’re worth watching or not, as I have not seen them. If you watch CUBE and want to see more, look up CUBE 2 and CUBE ZERO. ZERO is actually a prequel that came out seven years after the first. Check out the trailer for CUBE below.
