Earlier this month we thought Baz Luhrmann was going to walk away from his chance at directing an adaptation of The Great Gatsby but it has now been confirmed by ABC that he will direct the movie and move into pre-production next month. Luhrmann has decided to film in his hometown of Sydney, Australia where he also shot Australia and Moulin Rouge. We have seen plenty of other film and television adaptations of the great American classic THE GREAT GATSBY, the most memorable being the 1974 version starring Robert Redford. As it stands right now, Leonardo DiCaprio will star as Jay Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as the narrator Nick Carraway and Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan, Gatsby’s love interest, in Luhrmann’s new adaptation.
What’s very interesting is hearing that this film will be shot in 3D. Most movies shot this way are very action-oriented and contain objects constantly flying out of the screen towards the audience. It will be interesting to see how the filmmakers will take 3D and implement it in a way that makes sense in 1920s New York.
Luhrmann will direct the film based on a script written by Craig Pearce (Romeo and Juliet, Moulin Rouge). Filming is set to begin in August and will run for 17 weeks.
