Blum and Derrickson team up for horror-mystery

INSIDIOUS producer Jason Blum and THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE Director Scott Derrickson are working together on an as-of-yet untitled horror-mystery. Blum has mastered the art of creating low-budget big return films, with PARANORMAL ACTIVITY‘s success and making INSIDIOUS with a paltry two million dollars! It seems that model will be utilized once again for this upcoming film, although little information has been released so far. Blum is also planning on doing a witch film by Rob Zombie entitled THE LORDS OF SALEM later this year using a micro-budget. We’ll see how successful this campaign is going to be, but given his past success, Blum could be starting a new trend in horror production.

Scott Mann to helm SEVEN SAMURAI remake

Variety has reported that Scott Mann of Mann Made Films has signed on to direct the upcoming remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 masterpiece SEVEN SAMURAI. Mann’s previous work includes THE TOURNAMENT, and DOWN AMONGST THE DEAD MEN, so he seems an interesting choice for The Weinstein Company (TWC), especially given the success of the first SEVEN SAMURAI. Since the announcement of the project, many have been critical of TWC’s decision. Some feel the original 1954 version should stand for itself, and others have pointed to THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN as being more than enough remake for one story. However we’ll see what happens. HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN review

The grindhouse genre received an addition at this year’s Sundance film festival with Jason Eisener’s HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN. I recently had a chance to view the film, and I have to say I want that hour and a half of my life back. Seriously, I don’t know what Eisener was thinking, but this film is terrible, don’t waste your time. Yes, grindhouse films are supposed to be a bit campy, and have kind of a b-movie feel, and be full of gore and nudity and all, but they’re also supposed to have some kind of social or artistic value. HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN took being a grindhouse film way too seriously and actually IS a b movie. So, if you’re looking to be bombarded by images of senseless gore and bull****, this film is for you, but it honestly has little to no real social value. Continue reading

13 ASSASSINS review

Evil lords, honorable samurai, beautiful women, impossible tasks, death, that’s right the samurai epic is back! 13 ASSASSINS hits theaters in the United States today, and it’s not one to miss. Director Takashi Miike’s previous works have been impressive, including AUDITION, and ICHI THE KILLER, however this is his most mature and masterful film to date. Almost everything about this movie is pretty awesome. The art direction, set construction and cinematography are all top-notch, taking one right back to feudal Japan in a great way. Even the roads are well done. I also really enjoyed how Miike decided to limit the use of CGI in the film, giving it a more natural and gritty look… picture old-school syrup-style blood spraying everywhere and you’ll get it.

The sound editing in the film is also impressive. The music is minimal and the dialogue is mixed well with the chaos in the fight scenes, which are numerous. Speaking of dialogue, the film is in Japanese, and subtitled in English, which I particularly love. I don’t like dubbed films, it takes something away from them, and they sound terrible, so thank goodness. The actors speaking it will probably be little known in America, but the acting is superb, and I hope many will take notice. Everyone’s presence is necessary, and all of their roles are performed with skill, especially in the fight scenes. And, speaking of fight scenes, whoever did the choreography for all of them is good. Just as a teaser, there is one scene which pits the thirteen samurai against two-hundred, and nothing in the scene really gets confusing. But what about the plot? Continue reading

ATLAS SHRUGGED: Part 1 releasing this Friday

Part one of a film adaptation of Ayn Rand’s 1957 novel, ATLAS SHRUGGED, will be released on April 15th, 2011 in the United States. Due to the novel’s massive scope and length, those involved in production have decided to turn the story into a trilogy of films, and it should be interesting to see how this first installment turns out. The novel explores a dystopian United States of America, where society’s leading minds are disappearing and/or removing themselves in an attempt to “stop the motor of the world.” The protagonist, Dagny Taggart, is the operating executive of a major railroad company and is witness to the collapse of society as the government struggles to take control of business, including her own Taggart Transcontinental.

The part of Taggart will be played by Taylor Schilling, from the MERCY TV series, while the director of the film, Paul Johansson, will play the mysterious John Galt. Some of you may recognize Johansson from his role as Dan Scott on the TV series ONE TREE HILL, and he also played a role in 2006′s ALPHA DOG. We’ll see how he shapes up as director. John Aglialoro and Brian Patrick O’Toole co-wrote the screenplay, with Aglialoro also being a member of the production staff for the film. The company name behind production is The Strike Productions, who I am unfamiliar with. However, there has been an official website launched, and more information is available there. Despite the lack of star power, and the seemingly small scale of the production, I am honestly excited to see this one, and I hope it succeeds. Friday.

Tara Reid spoofs herself in THE BIG LEBOWSKI 2 trailer

Well…unfortunately it doesn’t look like there’s ACTUALLY going to be a THE BIG LEBOWSKI sequel made. However, Tara Reid and the folks over at Funny or Die have managed to put together a spoof trailer following all the rumors that were floating around. Check it out, then keep dreaming.

Competing fairy tale stories get casts

Ok, so there’s a new SLEEPING BEAUTY that will be coming out…wait, no, there will be two! Two? Really? Apparently so. Disney has begun work on MALEFICENT, which will follow the story line from the wicked witch’s perspective, and will be directed by Tim Burton. Rumors of Angelina Jolie being cast as the witch for that one have been floating around, but nothing’s set in stone. Then there’s another SLEEPING BEAUTY project in the works… only this one doesn’t even have a title yet. Actually, it doesn’t have a production company either, but that’s not stopping TRUE GRIT star Hailee Steinfeld from being cast as the beauty. The draft script by Lindsay Devlin has been making it’s way around Hollywood, and it will (supposedly) tell the story from the perspective of the sleeping “beauty,” as she travels through the dream world. More news on this as it is announced. Continue reading

Russel Brand considering ROCK OF AGES role

Russell Brand has recently indicated that he is considering joining Tom Cruise on a film production of the Broadway hit ROCK OF AGES. Brand has already played a rock and roller in such films as FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL, and GET HIM TO THE GREEK, so he would seem an obvious choice for such a roll. However, he has said that his involvement will depend on the filming schedule, as he wants to have time to spend with his wife, musician Katy Perry. What a sweetheart, huh?

Anyway, Brand would be joining an extremely star-studded cast. Among the names involved are: Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Paul Giamatti, Julianne Hough, and Mary J. Blige. The film is being directed by Adam Shankman, and is scheduled to be released in June of 2012.

ALIEN prequel PROMETHEUS has begun filming

OH YEAH! The ALIEN quadrilogy IS getting a prequel (sequel?) under the title PROMETHEUS! Ridley Scott is coming back as director for the project that is being overseen by both the Brandywine production company, and (Scott’s own) Scott Free productions. This is HUGE news for the millions of die-hard ALIEN fans the world over, and there is even an entire website dedicated to releasing information about the film.

The project entered the filming stages at Pinewood Studios last Monday, March 21st, and reports coming off the set are exciting. Apparently, the ENTIRE studio lot in Toronto, Canada has been dedicated to the film. And, there has been a report of a THREE-BLOCK-HIGH SET PIECE (Spaceship)! That’s right, a spaceship that is as tall as three city blocks are long. Continue reading
