Rob Marshall and Johnny Depp will bring us THE THIN MAN

Johnny Depp has had his eyes set on this project for quite some time now. He’s wanted to reunite with Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides director for this project, and until now, those were only wishes. In a press release sent out today, Rob Marshall has officially signed on to direct a remake of the classic film The Thin Man. With this press release comes the news that Nine producer John DeLuca will be producing this flick through his and Marshall’s LUCAMAR Production company.

Depp already has another ambitious project ahead of him, that being the remake of The Lone Ranger. I wonder how this project will effect the timeline currently in place for the that film, if there even is one. There’s also the obvious question of which actress would make the perfect Nora Charles. Michael Fassbender in talks for Danny Boyle’s TRANCE

We reported a few days ago that Danny Boyle has plans to make one more film before he got to work planning and directing the opening for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London. That film, titled Trance, will be shot later this year and then put on hold while the director works on the Olympics, then he will return to the film in August of 2012 to edit it down.

Since Boyle is working on a tight schedule, he’s going ahead with casting as fast as he can. THR reports Michael Fassbender has emerged as the frontrunner for the lead role. Hit the jump to find out what this film is all about and what part Fassbender might play. Continue reading

We’ve got a bunch of casting updates for you from all over the place. • Ricky Gervais has joined the cast of Robert Rodriguez’s Spy Kids: All the Time in the World, which already stars Jessica Alba, Jeremy Piven, Antonio Banderas and Joel McHale. Gervais will not show his face in this, but will lend his voice instead. The actor is going to lend his voice for a robotic spy dog, Argonaut. We’re not sure what the dog’s role is in the film, but he’ll probably do doggy things like playing fetch, rolling over and bypassing security checks. [THR] Continue reading

Quentin Tarantino wants Will Smith for lead in DJANGO UNCHAINED

Quentin Tarantino wants Will Smith for the lead role in his next film, Django Unchained, a spaghetti Western taking place in the Old South. There is no offer on the table right now, but if Smith and Tarantino can work out all of the details and come to an agreement, Smith will take on the role of Django, a freed slave who goes on a mission to reunite with his wife who is still a slave. Django eventually meets up with a German bounty hunter (possibly played by Christopher Waltz) and the two eventually work together.

THR also says Samuel L. Jackson is also another frontrunner for a lead role in the film. Jackson would play the house slave to the plantation owner who owns Django’s wife. Jackson’s character would eventually go head-to-head with Django. Continue reading

Saoirse Ronan leaves THE HOBBIT for Stephenie Meyer’s THE HOST

Will The Hobbit ever be able to film for more than a week without an actor dropping out of production? Just a few weeks ago Robert Krazinski announced he would be leaving the film in order to spend some time with his family, leaving the role of Fili wide open. Peter Jackson was quick with replacing Krazinski (Dean O’Gorman stepped up for the role), so it didn’t turn out to be that big of a deal.

Now The Belfast Telegraph is saying young starlet Saoirse Ronan has decided to leave The Hobbit so she can star in the big-screen adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s novel The Host. See what Ronan had to say after the jump. Continue reading

Joel Edgerton joins Kathryn Bigelow’s KILL BIN LADEN

About twenty minutes after President Obama announced the death of Osama Bin Laden, I started thinking how long it would take before a movie was made surrounding the covert operation that took down one of the world’s most wanted terrorist. My girlfriend said “Too soon, Ryan” but look who’s laughing now!

While director Kathryn Bigelow and writer Mark Boal had been working on this project for months, the unexpected assassination of Osama gave them a much needed “ending” for their film currently titled Kill Bin Laden. With an ending currently being written into the script, the film can progress even further now that they have a lead actor. Joel Edgerton has officially signed on for a role in the film which is said to start filming this summer. Continue reading

• Bill Murray has been rumored to be circling a movie where the actor would be thrown into the role of Franklin D. Roosevelt. This story has been a few months in the making, as now we can confirm that Murray will indeed play Roosevelt in Hyde Park On Hudson. The film will follow “the quasi-incestuous love affair between the president and his distant cousin, Margaret Stuckley, and takes place on the June 1939 weekend that the British King and Queen visited Roosevelt at his upstate New York cottage, in the first-ever visit to America by a member of the United Kingdom monarchy.” [Variety] Continue reading

Cameron Diaz knows WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE EXPECTING

Cameron Diaz is about to sign on to star in an adaptation of the bestselling manual What to Expect When You’re Expecting. The film will be directed by Kirk Jones with a script written by Heather Hach and Shauna Cross. Deadline says the plans are to turn the manual into a romantic comedy along the same lines as Love Actually. The story will follow five different couples, each expecting a child in the near future. Lionsgate will bring this rom-com to theaters with Mike Medavoy, Arnie Messer, David Thwaites and Doug McKay all producing.

What to Expect When You’re Expecting was written by Heidi Murkoff and has sold 16 million copies. So this book is definitely well known and should be able to pull in big numbers at the box office. Hit the jump to read my thoughts on the project. Continue reading

Steven Spielberg’s LINCOLN gains a huge cast including Tommy Lee Jones and Joseph Gordon-Levitt

And I thought The Hunger Games was going to have a huge cast. We’ve already known for quite some time that Daniel Day-Lewis would play Lincoln, and Sally Field will play Lincoln’s wife, Mary Todd. Today Steven Spielberg and company announced a huge number of names of top-of-the-line actors all gearing up for roles in Lincoln. Tommy Lee Jones, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and John Hawkes are just a few of the people signing on to the cast.

Jones will play Republican congressman Thaddeus Stevens, who was responsible for writing the legislation that funded the Civil War, and Gordon-Levitt will play Abe and Mary’s oldest son, Robert. Hit the jump to read the full press release sent out by Dreamworks. Continue reading

Hugh Grant, Martin Freeman and others join THE PIRATES! BAND OF MISFITS

Jack Sparrow and his group of mistfits aren’t the only pirates running the high seas, as new contenders step up to take over the reigns of the coolest pirates this side of Davey Jone’s Locker. Sony Pictures Animation, along with Aardman Animations, have signed on Hugh Grant, Martin Freeman, Jeremy Piven, David Tennant, Salma Hayek Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, Imelda Staunton, Brian Blessed and Ashely Jenson to all lend their voices in the new claymation flick The Pirates! Band of Misfits.

Chicken Run co-director Peter Lord will tackle the project, which will be stop-motion and shot in 3D. That right there should make for an interesting visual concept. Hit the jump to learn about the story and what roles some of the actors will play. Continue reading
