So you want to be a filmmaker. How do you do it? You gotta go to film school, right? Not necessarily. Here are four famous living film directors who never attended film school but still went on to become influential figures in cinema. Some people, no matter the field or profession, are imbued with God-given talent that makes film school irrelevant. Here’s my list:
1. Quentin Tarantino
Achievements: Quentin Tarantino is known for his sharp dialogue, nonlinear storytelling, and blending of genres. He became a cultural icon with films like Pulp Fiction (1994), Reservoir Dogs (1992), Jackie Brown (1997), Kill Bill (2003, 2004), Inglourious Basterds (2009), and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019). He has won two Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay (for Pulp Fiction and Django Unchained), among other numerous accolades.
Background: Tarantino never went to film school. Instead, he worked at a video rental store, where he immersed himself in films, eventually teaching himself the craft of filmmaking. He cites his love of cinema and his experiences as a cinephile as major influences on his directorial style.
2. Christopher Nolan
Achievements: Christopher Nolan is known for his complex storytelling and visually stunning films. His most notable works include Memento (2000), The Dark Knight Trilogy (2005–2012), Inception (2010), Dunkirk (2017), and Tenet (2020). He has received numerous awards, including Academy Award nominations, and is celebrated for his work in both the blockbuster and the arthouse realms.
Background: Nolan studied English literature at University College London, where he became involved in making short films. He learned the art of filmmaking through practical experience rather than formal film school education. His innovative use of practical effects and complex narrative structures has earned him a reputation as one of the most visionary directors of his generation.
3. Steven Spielberg
Achievements: Steven Spielberg is one of the most successful and influential filmmakers of all time. His blockbuster hits include Jaws (1975), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Indiana Jones series (1981–2008), Schindler’s List (1993), and Saving Private Ryan (1998). Spielberg has won two Academy Awards for Best Director and has been involved in some of the most iconic films in cinema history.
Background: Spielberg did not attend a formal film school. He briefly attended California State University, Long Beach, but dropped out to pursue his filmmaking career. He did, however, return to CSU Long Beach in 2002 to complete his bachelor of arts degree in film and electronic media. He submitted his masterwork, Schindler’s List, as his student film. Spielberg learned filmmaking by making short films and working in television before making a major breakthrough with Jaws. His career exemplifies the power of practical experience in the industry.
4. George Lucas
Achievements: George Lucas is best known for creating the Star Wars saga, founding the Indiana Jones franchise, and for American Graffiti, which inspired the hit television series, Happy Days. His innovative use of special effects and sound design revolutionized the film industry. Lucas founded Lucasfilm, which was later acquired by Disney, and developed groundbreaking technologies through his company, such as the creation of THX sound systems and advancements in visual effects with Industrial Light & Magic (ILM).
Background: Lucas attended the University of Southern California’s (USC) School of Cinematic Arts but did not follow a traditional route to filmmaking. He worked with mentors and made short films, but his real breakthrough came with the creation of Star Wars, which was initially met with skepticism by Hollywood. His unconventional approach to filmmaking and his focus on new technologies set him apart from many of his peers.
These directors prove that a formal film school education isn’t always necessary to achieve greatness in cinema. They all found their own paths into filmmaking through a combination of passion, persistence, and hands-on experience.
